How to Keep Your Hot Tub Clean and Comfortable Year-Round
A few minutes a week keeps the water clear, the tub ready, and the cover in good shape through every Iowa season.

A clean, comfortable hot tub is a tub you actually use. Water that's cloudy, foamy, or slightly off puts people off fast. The good news is that a steady routine takes only a few minutes each week, and it keeps the tub ready for those cold Iowa evenings.
None of this is complicated, but it does work best as a habit. Here's a plain-language routine that covers the water, the filter, the cover, and the changing seasons.
Test the water on a schedule
Testing is the center of everything. Test strips are the easy way to check your water regularly. Pick a day each week, check again after heavy use or a party, and follow the label on whatever products you use along with the guidance from your tub's manufacturer.
Water World carries a full range of water treatment products, including pH balancers, sanitizers and shock, algaecides, test strips, filter cleaners, stain and scale preventers, foam reducers, and clarifiers. You'll find silver system, chlorine, bromine, salt, and natural enzyme options, so ask which approach suits your tub and your habits.
Whatever you choose, keep it consistent. Switching back and forth between systems or mixing products without a plan is a common reason for water that never quite behaves. If something seems off, ask before adding more of anything.
Keep the filter happy
The filter does a lot of quiet work. Rinse it regularly, and give it a deeper soak in a filter cleaner from time to time. A clogged filter makes the tub work harder and the water look dull. When a filter is worn out, replace it. Water World stocks filters, pumps, jets, heaters, steps, covers, and cover lifters.
Spring and fall deserve a little extra attention. Falling leaves and blowing pollen mean the filter collects more than usual, so rinse it more often during those weeks. If you notice the water getting dull faster than normal, the filter is usually the first place to look, and a fresh cartridge is a small fix for a big difference.
Shower before you soak. It's the simplest habit with the biggest payoff. Body oils, lotions, hair products, and soap all end up in the water and in the filter, and a quick rinse keeps them out. It also means you'll spend less time fighting foam.
Cover care through the seasons
Keep the cover on whenever the tub isn't in use. It keeps out leaves, dust, and debris, and it holds heat in. Wipe it down now and then, and make sure it still fits snugly. Leaves in fall and pollen in spring are the usual culprits for a dirty cover, so a quick check keeps the mess from reaching the water.
Winter is where covers earn their keep. Snow on the cover is normal in Central Iowa, but heavy, wet snow can strain it. Clear it gently with a soft broom, never with a shovel or any sharp tool. A cover lifter makes the daily open and close much easier, especially when the cover is cold and stiff.
If you're shopping for a new one, Covana automatic covers are weather-resistant and fully insulated, with LED lighting and pull-down privacy screens. They're made in Canada, and they take the lifting out of the routine. It's worth a conversation if you've been fighting with a heavy cover all winter.
Watch for early warning signs
- Cloudy water that doesn't clear after treatment.
- Foam that builds up and stays.
- A noticeable smell, or a slick feel on the shell.
- White crust or stains around the waterline.
- A change in pump sound, or jets that feel weaker than usual.
Most of these have a simple answer, such as a clarifier, a foam reducer, a stain and scale preventer, or a new filter. A change in how the pump sounds is a different story, and that's worth a call. Catching things early almost always costs less than waiting.
Every tub also needs its water replaced from time to time. Ask your dealer about what schedule suits your tub and how often you use it, and plan the change for a mild day rather than a deep freeze.
