Hot tub energy efficiency facts

Thermo-Lock insulation, a self-supporting shell and an insulated cover: what keeps the heat in a Maax tub.

Chapter 01

Thermo-Lock keeps the pump's heat in the tub

Maax tubs use Thermo-Lock insulation, which Water World describes as certified by the California Energy Commission. It is built to trap the heat that pump motors give off, so that warmth stays around the water instead of leaving through the cabinet.

That is the practical meaning of an efficient tub: the equipment that runs all the time is also helping keep the water warm. When you compare brands, ask each dealer what the insulation is, where it sits and who certifies it.

A shell that carries its own weight

Maax builds a thick, self-supporting shell with no spray-foam structure, and most American Whirlpool and Vita Spa models add a steel frame. That is how the tub is built, separate from the insulation question, and worth seeing for yourself on the showroom floor.

Ask to look under a cabinet panel on a display tub. Dealers who build on good bones are usually glad to show you.

Chapter 03

Insulated covers and pre-enjoyed energy-saving tubs

The cover is the largest surface between warm water and cold Iowa air. A Covana automatic cover is fully insulated, so it is a natural pairing for a tub you plan to use through the winter.

Pre-enjoyed models include energy-saving ones among the restored trade-ins, typically at about half the cost of a comparable new tub.

Questions about insulation are welcome at 3619 Douglas Ave, Tuesday to Saturday, or call (515) 277-6066.

Pair the tub with the right cover

Covana covers are automatic, weather-resistant and fully insulated, with LED lighting and pull-down privacy screens. See Covana covers.
